Thoughts on Today’s Lessons

Worship begins in about an hour at St. Andrew’s, I am one of the worship leaders today, so I usually read over the scriptures before driving to church.

I pause over three sentences—

For I heard them say, “Let us go to Dothan (Genesis 37:17)

In South Alabama, everyone who read the Dothan Eagle knew this verse by heart because we read the newspaper banner each morning.  Think of all the places in your community that are named after biblical places or names.  Do those places conjure up positive or negative images?

As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:15)

How do we treat the preachers and apostles among us?  Do we really treat them as messengers from God, or are they hired help? If you are one of those messengers among us, do you know what a privilege it is to share the Good News to the people of God?

“Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27)

In the midst of this week of chaotic activity in the world (most weeks are that way), have you heeded Jesus’ word-“Do not be afraid”?  Think back over the Gospels, how many times did Jesus offer those words to his followers? What are you most afraid of today? Can you hear the Gospel in the midst of your fear?
