Fannie Lou Hamer

The folks at Common Prayer offered a quote by Fannie Lou Hamer today as a part of morning prayer.  Fannie Lou Hamer was a 1960’s Civil Rights activist from Mississippi who spoke prophetically about biblical justice.

“Christianity is being concerned about your fellow man, not building a million-dollar church while -people are starving right around the corner. Christ was a revolutionary person, out there where it was happening. That’s what God is all about, and that’s where I get my strength.”

another quote:

“With the people, for the people, by the people. I crack up when I hear it; I say, with the handful, for the handful, by the handful, ’cause that’s what really happens.”

Prayer

Help us, Lord, to do the one thing that is necessary: to tend to the poor, to walk alongside the poor, to find you among the poor, to declare ourselves poor as long as anyone suffers need. May we begin this journey with just one person today. Amen.
